Animal Magic and the Long Arc of Michael Ward with Dogs and Fishes
In partnership with Burtisimo
By Daniel Fusch
For more than four decades, Michael Ward has built one of the one of the longer-running and respected careers in independent American music. Not only as the songwriter, producer, guitarist, and vocalist behind Michael Ward with Dogs and Fishes, but as the longtime owner of Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, a room woven into the fabric of modern recording history.
A Studio Career Intertwined with Hyde Street
Ward is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer whose trajectory has always run parallel to the evolution of that building. When he and two partners took over the facility in 1980, it was still operating under the name Wally Heider Recording, the legendary studio that opened in 1969 and captured defining records by artists such as Grateful Dead, Herbie Hancock, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Santana, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Ward eventually became sole owner, guiding the studio into new eras. Under his stewardship, Hyde Street became a key site for punk and hip hop sessions involving Green Day and Tupac Shakur, while continuing to attract major artists including Train, Cake, and Kanye West.
His work as a producer has been equally expansive. Ward has overseen projects ranging from recordings with the BaAka tribe of the Ituri Forest during their first trip to America, to studio performances synchronized with Lines Ballet, to sessions involving artists such as Pharoah Sanders and Zakir Hussain. He has produced rock bands, composers, operettas, and his own catalog, reinforcing a reputation built on versatility rather than genre confinement.
The Sound of Dogs and Fishes
That depth of experience feeds directly into Michael Ward with Dogs and Fishes, a progressive rock project that blends blues, Americana, folk, and world beat influences into intricate instrumental interplay. The band is composed of seasoned San Francisco touring and session musicians whose histories intersect repeatedly at Hyde Street. Their cohesion is rooted in shared craft, not convenience.
Animal Magic, released on February 27 as the first single since the band’s Brighter Days album in August 2024, continues that trajectory. Ward wrote and produced the track himself, maintaining full creative control. Where much of his prior work has examined cultural and social observations, this song turns inward, focusing on the bond between humans and their animals. Rather than approaching the subject sentimentally, Ward frames it as a form of interdependence shaped by evolution and necessity, a long-standing partnership that has supported the continued presence of both.
Crafting the Sound
The instrumentation underscores that intimacy. Mandolin, mandocello, and accordion give the track a textured warmth that feels both roots-driven and exploratory. Basic tracks were recorded at Hyde Street Studios last year, grounding the song in the same rooms that have captured generations of landmark recordings. Overdubs followed at Ward’s home in San Francisco. Editing moved between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

A Collective of Seasoned Musicians
The personnel bring a collective range of experience across independent music projects. Collectively, members have collaborated with artists such as Journey, Etta James, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Tubes, and Todd Rundgren.
The release also aligns with the band’s April 1 performance at The Bitter End in New York City, a return that carries added resonance following the passing of guitarist Drew Zingg last year. The show serves as both continuation and tribute, underscoring the sense of community that defines the project.
A Career Built on Continuity
In an era defined by short cycles and constant reinvention, Michael Ward’s career reflects sustained commitment. Through stewardship of a historic studio and an unwavering dedication to musicianship, he has created a body of work that stands independent yet deeply connected to American music history. Animal Magic is the latest expression of that long, deliberate arc.
