Landon Donovan Collabs With a Company Transforming Hair Loss

A quiet, frantic obsession has remained loud beneath the spotlight. Hair has long been a radical expression of lifestyle, power, texture, and presence—from Jimi Hendrix’s iconic perms and Elvis Presley’s jet-black pompadour to the internet’s collective, microscopic fixation on Harry Styles’ hairline.

Beneath this visible obsession runs a quieter, far more isolating one.

For many, the experience arrives gradually: a widening part, a receding hairline, extra strands left behind in the shower drain. What may appear cosmetic on the surface often carries deeper psychological weight. Mirrors are avoided. Photographs are scrutinized. A single unflattering reflection before a night out can sour an entire evening or prompt a decision to stay home.

The change evolves into something personal: a private struggle navigated by millions, yet rarely discussed. Hair occupies a powerful yet heavily scrutinized cultural space. Its loss is often public, noticed, and commented on by family, friends, and even strangers. Yet despite its visibility, the internal impact has long been dismissed as vanity.

The Spotlight Follows

Former U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan has publicly experienced the overlap between hair loss, public scrutiny, and mental health. Long celebrated as one of the most accomplished players in American soccer history, Donovan has spoken publicly about depression and has also addressed the emotional impact of hair loss.

While competing at the highest level, he faced commentary about his appearance from sports media, opposing fans, and internet critics. His changing hairline became a recurring subject of public commentary.

The struggle unfolded over the years, largely in public. He pursued multiple treatments, including hair restoration procedures and a hair transplant. And while he searched for solutions, the commentary never stopped. The attention intensified during Euro 2024, when Donovan’s visibly thinning hair drew widespread commentary while he was working as a Fox Sports analyst. The moment became part of wider online discussion and sports-media commentary.

Rather than retreat in silence, Donovan chose transparency.

Now he’s risen as an outspoken advocate for destigmatizing hair loss in men. The former soccer star partnered with Absci, an AI-native biopharmaceutical company currently developing an AI-designed antibody as a potential treatment for pattern hair loss.

Rewriting Hair Loss

Donovan’s story sits at the center of a broader issue the hair-loss industry has faced for decades. Why, after so many years of visibility, have treatment options remained relatively limited?

The hair-loss treatment landscape has seen limited change over the past several decades. The last time regulators approved a treatment with an entirely new biological mechanism for pattern baldness was 1997.

Absci says they want to break that stagnation. The company has an investigational drug in human clinical trials for pattern hair loss. ABS-201 was designed using artificial intelligence to explore a biological pathway that differs from those addressed by currently approved hair-loss treatments. 

A New Approach

Absci has reported preclinical findings from ex vivo cultured human scalp models. The company’s data suggests that blocking prolactin receptor signaling with the AI-designed monoclonal antibody ABS-201 may play a role in supporting hair growth. Absci’s early research suggests the therapy may help maintain conditions that support follicle activity and the active growth phase.

Absci’s laboratory data offers a visual look at the company’s early research. In company-presented preclinical findings, follicles exposed to conditions associated with miniaturization appeared to show signs of protection and activity linked to hair growth.

The company designed ABS-201 as a long-acting subcutaneous injection. If future clinical trials support its safety and efficacy, the company says the injection-based approach could offer a less frequent dosing schedule than daily treatments.

ABS-201 is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1/2a human clinical trial recruiting in Australia.
