In an industry defined by speed, visibility, and the pressure to arrive early, THE Astrolabe enters from an entirely different place. Not late, not catching up – but arriving with intention.

The project is built on a story that feels almost countercultural in today’s music landscape. Its creator began this journey after three decades away from music – a detail that doesn’t read as novelty, but as foundation. THE Astrolabe doesn’t present itself as a comeback or a second chance. It feels more like the continuation of something that never truly left, only waited.

That sense of timing carried into a defining moment on 26 March, when selected guests and fans were invited to experience a pre-release presentation of THE Astrolabe’s first complete body of work at House of NYNN.

What unfolded that evening didn’t feel like a conventional showcase. It felt like a convergence – of artist and audience, of process and outcome, of two philosophies aligned in how culture should be created and experienced.

Conceived by NYNN as a series of inspiring places for inspiring people, House of NYNN is a private members’ club in the heart of Athens operating less as a venue and more as a living cultural environment. Here, music, art, conversation, gastronomy and wellbeing are not separate elements, but interconnected parts of a wider ecosystem. Members and guests don’t simply attend events – they become part of them, contributing to an ongoing cultural dialogue shaped by presence as much as performance, promoting an enriched way of living that extends beyond place.

Within that context, THE Astrolabe found a natural home.

Both the project and the space share a belief that culture is not something to be passively consumed, but something lived, felt, and collectively shaped. For THE Astrolabe, House of NYNN offered more than a stage — it provided a setting that understands music as atmosphere, dialogue, and experience. For House of NYNN, the showcase reflected its commitment to giving distinctive, thoughtful artistic voices the conditions to resonate fully.

At the heart of both is a shared idea: that the most meaningful experiences happen when the right people are brought together in the right space.

A LANGUAGE BEYOND GENRE

Musically, THE Astrolabe sits within pop, but only loosely. It treats the genre as a starting point rather than a boundary – something to expand, reshape, and push beyond expectation.

There are echoes of David Bowie in its instinct for reinvention, alongside the layered precision of Daft Punk. Elsewhere, moments of emotional clarity align with artists like RAYE and Charli XCX. But these references never settle into imitation. Instead, they act as signals within a broader, fluid sonic language.

THE Astrolabe describes its approach as “rock-sensitive rather than rock-defined” – a phrase that captures its emotional core. There is a willingness to experiment, to embrace contradiction, and to exist slightly outside conventional structure.

That openness extends into how the music is created. Much of the material begins on a mobile phone – not as a limitation, but as a deliberate choice. The device becomes a portable studio, allowing ideas to be captured instantly, wherever they arise. It removes friction from the creative process and keeps the focus on instinct rather than perfection.

In doing so, THE Astrolabe subtly challenges the idea that music must be built within traditional systems to carry weight. Instead, it leans into immediacy – allowing ideas to remain raw long enough to evolve into something more honest.

THE ASTROLABE AS A CREATIVE LAB

If THE Astrolabe resists genre boundaries, it also resists fixed identity.

Rather than operating as a static project, it behaves more like a living system – a creative laboratory where ideas are tested, reshaped, and allowed to evolve. Songs are not treated as finished objects, but as starting points. The work is shaped through collaboration, drawing in musicians, creatives, and performers who contribute to its expanding world.

Within the environment of House of NYNN, that “lab” dynamic becomes fully visible.

The showcase unfolded as something in motion – a space where sound, emotion, and presence intersected in real time. The boundaries between artist and audience softened. What emerged was not just performance, but participation. A shared experience shaped collectively in the moment.

This approach reframes the role of music itself. It becomes less about delivering a finished product, and more about creating a space where connection can happen.

BETWEEN ATHENS AND LONDON

THE Astrolabe’s identity is shaped by its position between Athens and London – a duality that informs both its sound and perspective.

Athens provides grounding – a cultural and emotional base rooted in history and depth. London offers reach – a broader, outward-facing context that connects the project to an international landscape. Together, they create a balance between intimacy and scale.

This cross-cultural foundation has already begun to shape THE Astrolabe’s trajectory. Following an initial London launch in late 2024, the project has built momentum through performances in Athens and a growing presence across Greece, including participation in the national Eurovision selection process. Not as a defining frame, but as part of a wider evolution.

RIGHT ON TIME

As THE Astrolabe moves into its next phase, its approach remains consistent – measured, intentional, and resistant to unnecessary urgency.

New material will continue to emerge throughout 2026, leading towards a full album later in the year, titled “Right on Time” – coincidentally echoing the meaning of the word “NYNN,” which means “now”. The release is framed not as reinvention, but as return – the surfacing of something long held back.

That distinction captures the essence of the project. THE Astrolabe is not reacting to the present moment, but arriving at it. Carrying with it the weight of time, experience, and perspective.

In a culture that often prioritises speed, it offers something different. A reminder that creativity does not operate on a fixed timeline. That some ideas need time to take shape. That some voices arrive later – but with far greater clarity. And when they do, they don’t feel late. They feel exactly as they should.
