Oppenheimer and Poor Things

Hollywood’s biggest night is almost here. Jimmy Kimmel is scheduled to host the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 10. And the only thing as exciting as seeing which directors, actors, screenwriters, and more take home an Oscar is knowing which ones have earned nominations for film’s top honor in the first place. Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid announced the contenders for this year’s ceremony on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is the most nominated film at the 2024 Academy Awards with 13 nods including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., and Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt, who is now a first-time Oscar nominee. The blockbuster film is also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Cinematography, among others.

Yorgos Lanthimos trails Nolan with Poor Things, earning nominations across 11 categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Emma Stone, and Best Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo. It’s also up for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and more.

Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon followed closely behind with 10 nominations. The film is up for Best Picture, with Lily Gladstone earning a nod for Best Actress and Robert De Niro for Best Supporting Actor. Scorsese has earned his 10th career nomination for Best Director, surpassing Steven Spielberg’s record of nine career nominations as the most-nominated living director of all time. The film also made an unexpected appearance in the Best Original Song category for Scott George’s “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People).”

While Oppenheimer led nominations, its bright pink summer counterpart Barbie collected eight nods, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. With no nominations for Barbie herself, Margot Robbie, or Best Director for Greta Gerwig, the film did appear in both supporting categories. America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling are nominated for Best Support Actress and Actor, respectively. The film also scored two nominations for Best Original Song, for Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s “I’m Just Ken” and Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “What Was I Made For?”

Bradley Cooper’s Maestro is also up for Best Picture, earning additional nominations for Best Actress with Carey Mulligan and Best Actor with Cooper. The film has also been nominated for Best Original Screenplay, a category that also includes Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, May December, and Past Lives. This marks the only nod for May December and the second for Past Lives, which is up for Best Picture as well.

The other leading films of 2023 — including Justine Trite’s Anatomy of a Fall, Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction — earned five nominations each. All of the films are nominated for Best Picture, while Glazer and Triet both picked up Best Director nominations. This year’s nominations also include nods for The Holdovers’ Da’Vine Joy Randolph, The Color Purple’s Danielle Brooks, Rustin’s Colman Domingo, Nyad’s Annette Bening, American Fiction’s Sterling K Brown, and more.

The 2024 Oscar nominations across all 23 categories comprise qualifying films released between Jan. 1, 2023, and Dec. 31, 2023.
