The first trailer has dropped for Back To Black, the anticipated biopic of Amy Winehouse’s life.

The film, which stars Industry‘s Marisa Abela as the late singer, will explore her mercurial rise and tragic death at the age of just 27 in 2011.

In the first trailer, Abela’s Winehouse is seen at the formative stages of her career, but a brief glimpse is given at her Grammy-winning triumph back in 2008.

Alongside Abela in the film is  Jack O’Connell as Amy’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan and Juliet Cowan as Amy’s parents Mitch and Janis Winehouse, and Lesley Manville as Amy’s beloved grandmother, Cynthia.

It’s directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, who previously directed the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, and produced by Alison Owen and Debra Hayward.

Sam Taylor-Johnson said: “Discovering a talent like Marisa Abela is akin to finding gold dust. The moment she looked into the lens at her first audition I knew she was the perfect actor to play Amy Winehouse. She put in an enormous amount of work, attention to every detail and she trained daily for hours to be able to sing throughout the entire movie. She doesn’t impersonate Amy, she inhabits her.”

Back To Black marks the second attempt to create a biopic of Winehouse’s life, following an abandoned 2015 project that was set to star Noomi Rapace as Winehouse and directed by Irish filmmaker Kristen Sheridan.

The film arrives in cinemas on April 12 2024.
