The first trailer has arrived for Lin Manuel Miranda’s Netflix musical ‘Tick, Tick… Boom’, which charts the life of ‘Rent’ creator Jonathan Larson as he battled to finish the iconic show.

The film is adapted from a musical of the same name and follows Larson’s creative struggles while writing the show – which told the story of impoverished artists living under the shadow of the HIV/Aids epidemic in New York’s East Village.

Larson is portrayed by Andrew Garfield, whose talents are showcased in ’30/90′ – the first single from the soundtrack to arrive.

According to an official synopsis, the film will follow Larson, “a young theatre composer who’s waiting tables at a New York City diner in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical,” ‘Rent’, while dealing from pressure from his girlfriend and the AIDS epidemic.

“Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere: from his girlfriend Susan, who dreams of an artistic life beyond New York City; from his friend Michael, who has moved on from his dream to a life of financial security, amidst an artistic community being ravaged by the AIDS epidemic.”

Vanessa Hudgens, Bradley Whitford, and Tony Award-winner Judith Light will also be starring in the film and performing on the soundtrack, which will be released soon.

This is not the first time Garfield has appeared in a show about HIV/AIDS, having previously starred in Tony Kushner’s ‘Angels in America’ on Broadway.

‘Tick, tick… Boom!’ is Miranda’s debut as a director, working with ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ writer Steven Levenson.

Miranda is best known for creating the Tony-award winning Broadway musical ‘Hamilton’, which has since spawned several tours across the world and made a place for itself on the West End too.

He is also behind ‘Bring It On: The Musical’, adapted from the popular cheerleading films, and ‘In The Heights’, which was recently adapted for the big screen starring Anthony Ramos.

‘Tick, tick… Boom!’ will premiere in UK cinemas from November 12 and will be available to stream on Netflix from November 19.
