Boardmasters 2025 kicked off yesterday with an electric start to what is set to be an unforgettable weekend.

The festival returns to the clifftops of Watergate Bay in Newquay this weekend, with headline sets to come from RAYE, Central Cee and The Prodigy. Before the main stage begins on Friday, Boardmasters’ first night allowed fans to dive into the festival’s smaller corners, with all manner of entertainment on offer.

On the festival site, tribute bands (Blonk 182, Not The Beatles, Do It Like Dua), beloved institutions such as Rockaoke and Bongo’s Bingo and silent disco sets from Jaguar Skills, Sigma and more got the energetic crowd in the mood.

Down in Newquay town centre, the event’s second base, attendees could watch world-class surf competitions, pump iron at the Muscle Beach installation and witness the return of the much-loved Headland skate ramp to the programme.

Beginning as a surfing event in 1981, Boardmasters has since become one of the UK’s premier music festivals while staying close to its roots. Beginning as a surfing event in 1981, Boardmasters has since become one of the UK’s premier music festivals while staying close to its roots. Across two sites, it provides a unique experience for festivalgoers, with both a camping festival and beach holiday rolled into one.

While the rest of the weekend promises noughties nostalgia (Kaiser Chiefs, Natasha Bedingfield), cutting-edge names defining the 2020s (Flowdan, Fat Dog, Wet Leg) and a superb DJ line-up (Salute, Jazzy, Patrick Topping), Thursday at Boardmasters allowed festivalgoers to explore the festival’s roots and all it has to offer. It was an anticipatory beginning to what’s set to be a summer-defining weekend.
