Grimes’ new song ‘Player Of Games’ appears to make a number of thinly-veiled references to Elon Musk.

The track, released last Friday (December 3), is Grimes‘ first solo track since her September ‘semi-separation’ from the billionaire business magnate and Tesla and SpaceX CEO.

The musician and Musk had dated since 2018, and their son X Æ A-Xii was born last year. Speaking about their breakup, Musk blamed their respective work commitments.

“It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or traveling overseas and her work is primarily in LA,” he explained.

Many have picked up on lyrics apparently referencing Musk’s focus on SpaceX, such as: “Baby how can I compare to the adventure out there/Sail away to the cold expanse of space/Even love couldn’t keep you in your place”.

It’s also believed that the track’s title and chorus refers to Musk’s well-known love of video games. “I’m in love/With the greatest gamer/But he’ll always love the game/More than he loves me” Grimes sings. Before launching his first successful venture Zip2 in 1995, Musk worked for the video game company Rocket Science.

Last month, meanwhile, Grimes founded an AI girl group called NPC and released its first single, a collaboration with DJ-producer Chris Lake called ‘A Drug From God’.

She revealed in an Instagram post about the NPC announcement that the project still has more visual elements to come. She wrote: “We’re super behind on everything and you’ll all see why in a month or so, so I apologise about delays of music and visuals.”

Grimes’ forthcoming album will be her sixth, and has been described as a “space opera” focusing on a lesbian AI romance involving a character named Claire De Lune.
