5 albums you need to hear this week

The best new releases on streaming this week, with music by Calvin Harris, Mall Grab and Fireboy DML

By Rolling Stone UK

In the age of streaming, it’s never been easier to listen to new music — but with over 60,000 new songs added to Spotify every day, it’s also never been harder to know what to put on. Every week, the team at Rolling Stone UK will run down some of the best new releases that have been added to streaming services.

This week, we’ve highlighted records by Calvin Harris, Mall Grab, and Fireboy DML.

Calvin Harris, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2

Calvin Harris, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2

Half a decade after its first edition, Calvin Harris is back for round two of his luxurious, star-studded pool party soundtracks. With Dua Lipa, Halsey, Justin Timberlake, Charlie Puth and more on board, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 provides little sonic expansion upon its predecessor, but refines and perfects the formula of sugary choruses, syrupy basslines and sun-drenched sounds.

Fireboy DML, Playboy

Fireboy DML, Playboy

On his third album, Nigerian superstar Fireboy DML brings in the big guns and celebrates his success. Helmed by huge lead single ‘Peru’, which received a chart-topping remix featuring Ed Sheeran at the end of 2021, Playboy also features Rema, Shenseea and more. With a distinctly more pop-leaning sound than on previous releases, the new record sees Fireboy ready to take up his throne as a new king of Nigerian pop.

Lauv, All 4 Nothing

Lauv, All 4 Nothing

Lauv says his new album All 4 Nothing is “about the death of a dream I was chasing and waking to that dream that was already there.” Across the album, the alt-pop star stops chasing hypothetical future success and instead reflects on what he has, making him a far more relatable prospect in the process.

Mall Grab, What I Breathe

Mall Grab, What I Breathe

It’s been a long road to Australian-born, London-based producer Mall Grab’s debut album, and What I Breathe honours the journey to get here. The record features contributions from Nia Archives, Brendan Yates of hardcore band Turnstile, D Double E, Novelist and more, and Mall Grab’s past in thumping house music sits against the genre-resistant influence of his adopted hometown on a record that looks firmly forwards.
