A$AP Rocky is out on bail after he was arrested yesterday (April 20), in connection with a shooting that happened in late 2021.

The rapper was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after arriving on a private plane from Barbados, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The rapper had been on holiday with girlfriend Rihanna, and multiple law enforcement sources said she was with A$AP when the arrest happened, according to NBC.

A search warrant has also be executed at the rapper’s residence in Los Angeles. His attorney, Alan Jackson, confirmed that his client has been arrested.

The rapper, real name Rakim Athelaston Mayers, was taken to jail at 12:42pm local time, and bail was set at  $550,000 (£421,291), according to the LA County Sheriff’s Department.

He was released less than three hours later after posting bond, and a court date has been set for August 17.

A statement from the LA police department release yesterday said: “On November 6, 2021, around 10:15 p.m., an argument between two acquaintances occurred in the area of Selma Avenue and Argyle Avenue, in the Hollywood Area. The argument escalated and resulted in the suspect firing a handgun at the victim. The victim sustained a minor injury from the incident and later sought his medical treatment. Following the shooting, the suspect and two additional males fled the area on foot.

“Detectives worked diligently to investigate and corroborate the reporting information which helped identify the suspect(s) involved. The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Rakim Mayers, a Los Angeles resident, also known as music artist A$AP Rocky.”

LAPD officers arrested the rapper for “assault with a deadly weapon (firearm)”.

The statement added that the case will be “be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.”

Rolling Stone UK has reached out to representatives of A$AP Rocky for comment.

Earlier this year, Rihanna confirmed that she’s expecting her first child with A$AP Rocky.

A$AP is meant to be headlining at this year’s Wireless Festival at Crystal Palace on July 1. It’s not yet clear if his arrest will affect this upcoming appearance.
