A British peer has seemingly let the cat out of the bag about long-standing rumours that Oasis will play Knebworth next summer, before backtracking on her claims.

The apparent clanger came courtesy of Baroness Taylor of Stevenage, who stood up in the House of Lords’ on Wednesday (October 22) and claimed that Oasis were playing five back-to-back anniversary gigs at Knebworth House next year.

It follows rumours that the newly-reunited icons will return to the site of their legendary 1996 gigs, which sold out in under 24 hours, to mark the 30th anniversary of the occasion.

“Next July, I have the benefit of five days of Oasis concerts in the fantastic venue of Knebworth House, which is just about a mile from my house,” Baroness Taylor told the House, according to The Guardian.

She added: “I can hear and enjoy [the gigs] from my house, and they represent the important cultural role of music venues and…make an enormous contribution to our economy.”

But when further questioned by The Guardian, Lady Taylor seemingly backtracked on the claim.

She told the outlet: “I was speaking hypothetically following speculation that they would play Knebworth again as they did in August 1996. I understand the band have not confirmed this.”

Her comments after Liam Gallagher teased more dates at the group’s final Wembley show, telling fans “see you next year,” before jokingly slapping himself on the wrist wrists to scold himself for letting it slip.

“These gigs show there’s an unfathomably big appetite for more shows and the sense that they could become Wembley’s nightly house band if they really wanted and still sell it out,” we wrote of the show.

“It’s the perfect end to a biblical summer, but if you’ll allow us to paraphrase one of Noel’s funniest interviews for a moment. Are we happy with that? No we’re not. We want MORE!”

The band’s hugely anticipated comeback tour  kicked off in Cardiff in July, a subsequent homecoming at Heaton Park and a run of shows at Wembley Stadium, before their biggest North American shows and a final flourish at Wembley. They are now touring the Far East, Australia and South America, with the dates wrapping up at the end of November.
