FKA twigs has discussed the earliest influences on her career, with Prince taking a pivotal role.

The singer and all-round artist appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone UK to cap off a huge 12 months which recently saw her win album of the year at the ZYN Rolling Stone UK Awards for her third album Eusexua.

In a new behind the scenes video from her cover shoot, twigs explained how Prince’s Emancipation was the first physical album she ever purchased.

“Discovering Prince’s world at a pretty young age, I think between nine and eleven, was when I really started to understand just what an incredible artist he was and what a world builder he was,” she said.

“How talented, how brave, how different, how extraordinary. He just opened my mind to what it really means to be a performer, a musician, a lyricist, a writer, an entity and it definitely informed the way that I began to grow and see myself as an artist in my teenage years.”

She also opened up on some of the most unexpected things in her playlist, which includes songs from Les Miserables such as ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ and some of Nina Simone’s classic work.

“Nina Simone was on my most listened to music on Spotify last year,” she said.

This year also saw Twigs release Eusexua Afterglow, the celebrated sequel to her last record.

“While techno bass still forms the album’s backbone, the main sonic development on Afterglow is the even greater prioritisation of hooks and melody,” our review stated.

“…On Afterglow, the story and universe of eusexua deepens as FKA twigs fully learns to let go.”
