The Oasis film documenting their legendary Knebworth performances has set box office records after hitting the big screen last week.

‘Oasis Knebworth 1996’ is the highest-grossing documentary of the year, bringing in a total of £634,728 to date. It initially opened across 2,100 cinemas in 61 countries over the weekend and went straight to number one. Cinemas are now putting on extra showings due to audience demand.

The documentary focuses on the iconic shows from 1996, and contains thoughts and memories from the band and fans who were there. It was made by Grammy Award-winning director Jake Scott, and it features unearthed archive concert footage.

The top spot was previously held by Disney’s ‘Summer Of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)’ which raked in £454,602 total gross.

Sony Music Entertainment President Tom Mackay said: “We are thrilled to see that fans around the world have enjoyed the incredible cinematic experience of ‘Oasis Knebworth 1996’ and we look forward to providing audiences with even more opportunities to relive the energy and excitement around these iconic concerts soon.”

Noel Gallagher and guitarist Bonehead also provide narration throughout the film.

Director Jake Scott also recently told NME why he thinks Liam didn’t want to contribute much in the way of speech: “Honestly, I think it was just Liam’s personal preference. As I understood it, he felt the film spoke for itself. Noel and Bonehead offered a lot, Liam wasn’t gonna offer much more. He’s a different person to Noel.

“He’s a performer and you find this with a lot of actors, they don’t want the distraction of anything else. They want to be in the present moment. And I wonder if it’s a bit of that really, a bit of artistic integrity. ‘I don’t want to remember and go back. I’m doing my tour right now and I wanna focus on that.’”
