Olly Alexander has announced a new Years & Years album ‘Night Call’, and shared its lead single ‘Crave’.

The record, the first to arrive since Years & Years became the solo project of Alexander earlier this year, will land on January 7, 2022 via Polydor.

He said of the record: “I was writing from a fantastical space, stuck in the same four walls. I wanted to have as much pleasure as possible in the music.”

‘Crave’, meanwhile, is described as “a playful way of inhabiting the deranged sexual energy I’ve always wanted”.

“In the past I felt like I’ve been dominated by toxic relationships, and I felt like it would be fun to turn it on its head,” he said.

For much of Years & Years’ success, the band was a three-piece including Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Türkmen. They were a trio when breakout hit ‘King’ hit number one in 2015.

However, in a statement confirming their split, the band said they remain “good friends”.

‘Night Call’ will be the third Years & Years album after 2015’s ‘Communion’ and 2018’s ‘Palo Santo’.

It is not yet known whether ‘Night Call’ will include Alexander’s cover of the Pet Shop Boys’ ‘It’s A Sin’.

The track was recorded after Alexander’s turn in this year’s Channel 4 show of the same name. The show focused on the impact of HIV and Aids in 80s London, with the star playing main character Ritchie.

Alexander then released the single ‘Starstruck’ in April.

Speaking about the project’s new direction with Capital FM in April, ‘Shine’ singer Alexander said the band had “grown apart musically”.

He explained: “We kind of stopped making music together, and when we announced that I was going to be Years & Years, it had kind of been a long time coming.”
