Sombr has criticised London’s Brixton Academy venue after playing three gigs there this week at which he called out security onstage.

The American singer headlined three shows at the south London venue this week (March 8-10), and on the last of the three shows he criticised security from the stage for what he said was a slow reaction to an audience member fainting.

“Alright, stop the show, guys, there’s someone passed out over here,” he’s seen to be saying from the stage. “This is the most poorly managed venue I’ve ever played at in my life.”

Sombr added: “You guys need to pay attention, it’s insane. Safety comes first.”

Brixton Academy was closed for nearly two years from 2022-2024 when security worker Gabrielle Hutchinson and mother-of-two Rebecca Ikumelo were killed in a deadly crush at an Asake concert in late 2022.

The Metropolitan Police applied to have the license permanently revoked, but the venue reopened in 2024 with new, robust safety measures laid out at a council hearing.

The venue have yet to respond to Sombr’s onstage comments.
