In the heart of Charlottenburg, the hotel bridges considered design with local art, steps from the city's famed galleries

Berlin is a multi-faceted city where culture is not just a marketing hook; it’s woven into its fabric. From its legendary club scene to its burgeoning fashion industry, with Berlin Fashion Week now vying for a stronger foothold on the global stage, the city thrives on constant reinvention. On my recent trip to The Dean Berlin, I decided to frame my stay entirely around its art scene, using the hotel as a base to explore the city’s creative pulse.

And why wouldn’t I? From David Lynch’s retrospective at Pace Gallery to Sarah Lucas’ sculptures on show at Contemporary Fine Arts just steps away, Berlin’s cultural offering feels both expansive and deeply intentional. In this context, The Dean proved to be the perfect anchor point, not only situating me within Charlottenburg’s creative energy but also reflecting it through its own carefully considered design language and artistic programming.

“Berlin, as a city, is so intriguing”, co-founder Keith Evans tells me. “It has a free spirit that’s impossible to recreate.” Along with Kai Tan, the duo are focused on building a hotel that actively supports and showcases the creative community around it, rather than simply existing alongside it.

“You cannot be a real lifestyle hotel if you aren’t unique to your location,” adds Tan. That philosophy is evident throughout the space, a late-19th-century building at the corner of Charlottenburg’s most dynamic streets revived through intentional decor and sculptural furniture, reflecting the varied movements that’ve defined the city’s expansive art history.

Stepping into the lobby, a carefully curated selection of works by emerging and established artists takes centre stage. Working with independent curator Thom Oosterhof, the considered collection reflects the tastes of its founders. A stone’s throw from the nearby galleries, it felt like my day spent inspired by art never ended.

That sense of engagement is perhaps most visible in The Dean’s broader ambition. “We want to platform talent,” the team says, framing hospitality as a bridge between travellers, locals, and creatives. “Hospitality can be this incredible bridge to culture.” In practice, that means the hotel often feels more like a cultural hub than a traditional place to stay, where conversations about art and design are part of the everyday atmosphere.

In the room, warm, tactile finishes create a space that feels composed like a still life, with furnishings carefully arranged as if in a studied composition. Designed by Rachael Gowdridge, the space blends sculptural detail with soft, lived-in comfort.

Mornings at The Dean begin at The Benedict, a long-standing local spot known for serving breakfast all day. On an uncharacteristically bright Saturday morning, locals convened, bringing a vibrancy that makes Charlottenburg feel distinctly different and sets the tone for the day ahead.

Whether heading to galleries, exploring the local fashion, or simply wandering Charlottenburg’s quieter streets, the hotel’s location makes it an ideal base for exploration. A brisk walk to CAMERA WORK Photogallery offered a clear sense of the neighbourhood, buzzy in a way that feels comforting. It’s a place that makes you feel like a local, away from the usual tourist rhythm.

“We could have a cookie-cutter approach, but the narrative is becoming a lot more discerning,” Tan explains. In many ways, The Dean Berlin captures what makes the city itself so compelling. It is layered, expressive, and deeply rooted in creativity. By weaving art, design, and community into its identity, the hotel becomes more than just accommodation; it becomes part of the cultural landscape it celebrates.
