Paul Gorton: The final week of ‘The Traitors’ is here and anything could happen
Buckle up for a huge finale!
By Paul Gorton
When The Traitors concludes with the grand final this Friday, I’m convinced that we’ll be remembering it as the year of grand reveals. Amanda the secret detective. Judy and Roxy being a secret mum and daughter. Ellie and Ross being a couple. Harriet the secret barrister!
It’s been a year of intrigue, chaos and total unpredictability and, as a result, quite possibly the greatest season of The Traitors yet. And I absolutely include season two – my own season – in that.
Because let’s face it, none of us know which way it’s going to go on Friday night. I thought Harriet was in with a good chance last week and I called her the greatest faithful to ever play the game. We quickly saw that I was wrong there.
As it stands, I think Rachel and Stephen remain an incredible team. I previously struggled to get on board with the notion that two Traitors could come together and support each other so strongly. One thing about me is that I’m a bit of a sci-fi fan and I think that the dark forest theory, which was popularised in Liu Cixin’s book of the same name, perfectly illustrates why this is the case.
This is the idea that civilisations might exist throughout the universe, but they will remain silent and hidden out of fear that revealing themselves would lead to destruction by an even more hostile civilisation. Imagine that first civilisation as the Traitors, and the second one as the absolute hurricane that was Fiona as the secret Traitor.
Fiona, it’s fair to say, shook the Traitors to their core. She was brilliant in that role. But what it did do was bond them together as a unit and their survival instincts were incredible. I can’t see them going against each other now, but you never know. This show is anything if not predictable.
It also helps they’ve played a blinder in the week leading up to the final. Jessie was an incredibly strong Faithful, so a great move to murder her. Ellie, too, incredibly smart. A clever move. And of course shout out to everyone else left: Matthew, Roxy, James, Jade, Faraaz. They’ve all done brilliantly to get this far.
Anything could happen, and that’s the beauty of this incredibly unpredictable game. A Traitors win could cement that aforementioned status as the best series yet, while a Faithful win would be nothing short of heroic. Here we bloody go…
