Stephen King has shared a new essay on Netflix hit Baby Reindeer, lauding it as “one of the best things I have ever seen”.

The hit series was written and created by Richard Gadd, and tells the real-life story of his life and struggles with a serial stalker.

Writing for The Times, King lauded the show and called it “one of the best things” he’d ever watched, saying: “Unlike most streaming series’ episodes, which can feel bloated at 50minutes — or even longer — the episodes of Baby Reindeer, each about 30minutes, are like short, swift stabs administered by a very sharp knife.”

The author added: “The great gift (I will not call it a trick) of Baby Reindeer is that we come to understand why it has taken so long for Donny to report his abuse. In his heart, Donny believes he deserves it. We feel empathy for him rather than impatience, and we come to feel empathy for Martha as well.”

Writing for Rolling Stone, Alan Sepinwall discussed the impact of the show on Gadd’s career and the TV industry at large.

“As a writer and as a performer, he’s more than just these terrible things that happened to him; he wrote briefly for Sex Education, and has done a lot of TV acting over the years,” he wrote. “But when you become famous for adapting your own story for the screen, audiences may come to expect the same feeling from whatever you do next — fair or not, true or not.”
