American Chris Hart Makes His Own Music and a Name for Himself in London
In partnership with Artist Formula Record Group
Two years after leaving Atlanta, the self-taught singer-songwriter is a regular on the London scene. Now he’s setting his sights on the rest of the UK.
Most people picture a music career starting in a professional studio. An engineer sits at the desk, a producer offers notes, and a hefty invoice waits at the end. For many independent artists, that picture never becomes real. Chris Hart, an American singer-songwriter living in London, decided he didn’t need it. He writes, produces, and mixes his own songs, playing multiple instruments. His new single, “Gone Tonight,” came out on 21 August 2026, and it’s about the part of the job most people never see.
Why Recording Costs Hold Artists Back
Recording has never been cheap. Studio time, session players, and mixing engineers add up fast when there’s no label footing the bill. Many gifted songwriters end up with notebooks full of lyrics and very few finished tracks. Others now hand the creative work to AI software.
Hart doesn’t think artists need to go either route, and he’s convinced you don’t need expensive gear to get started. “Music is expensive if you have to outsource everything, and it limits the output for creative people,” he says. He meets many artists who don’t know how to record, and he thinks it holds them back.

A Late Start and a Home Studio
Hart started playing guitar at nine, but for years music stayed on the side. “I’m a late starter, a second-guesser,” he says. He had no connections in the industry and assumed breaking in was impossible, so he spent years doing what he thought he was supposed to do.
That changed in his mid-twenties, when his wife encouraged him to try local open mic nights. By 26, he was taking music seriously. Nobody was going to hand him a studio, so he taught himself and set up his first one at home. “If I never tried learning how to produce and write music, I’d still be in the same spot I was four years ago,” he says.
Two years ago, Hart moved from Atlanta to London. His debut album, Anywhere, arrived in June 2025, and he produced it himself. The songs draw from his experience of chasing new opportunities, missing home, finding his place in the city’s scene, and finally going full-time with his music. The singles “July” and “Heatwave” followed.

Life on the London Gig Circuit
These days, Hart is a regular on the London scene. He plays pubs and small rooms all over the city and has performed at festivals around London. You can follow his gig dates and studio updates on Instagram.
“Gone Tonight” is about the less glamorous side of that routine. It runs on driving guitars and heartland-rock energy, with echoes of Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Sam Fender, and Noah Kahan. The lyrics move through late nights, near-empty pubs, long rides home, and bad food after midnight.
The song doesn’t wrap things up neatly; it fades out the way those nights do, knowing the next one starts tomorrow. It’s honest about the grind, but you can hear why he keeps showing up.

Bigger Venues and Advice for Other Artists
Hart now has a small team behind him, and he’s looking past the capital. He wants to tour the UK, book more festivals and take his music into Europe. Eventually, he’d like to get back to the States too. “I’m ready to get out of the pubs and start regularly playing in some bigger rooms,” he says.Hart’s new songs lean more pop-rock, and he wants every show to feel like something people look forward to.
For other artists, his advice is simple: don’t wait for anyone’s permission, and don’t be afraid to teach yourself. “It’s never too late to start something you care about, but don’t wait if you can help it!” he says.
“Gone Tonight” is out now, and you can hear it with the rest of his catalogue on his YouTube channel.
