The first trailer for the new ‘Home Alone’ reboot has been released, with viewers criticising the idea of remaking the beloved 1990 classic.

‘Home Sweet Home Alone’ will retell the story of the Christmas film about a young boy accidentally left at home while his family head on holiday over the festive period.

Macaulay Culkin played Kevin McAllister in the original, but the plucky youngster this time around is a boy called Max, played by ‘Jojo Rabbit’ star Archie Yates.

Irish comedian Aisling Bea also stars alongside Yates, both bringing an English accent to the once all-American story and reusing some lines from the original film.

Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney also feature as the bumbling trespassers, the roles originally made famous by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. This time the family jets to Tokyo instead of the Paris destination shown in the first film.

The film’s IMDB synopsis reads: “A married couple tries to steal back a valuable heirloom from a troublesome kid.”

Macaulay Culkin, who starred as Kevin in the original and sequel ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’, took to Twitter to dispel rumours that he might be returning.

Just a heads up since I’ve been getting this question a lot today,” he wrote. “I am NOT in the new Home Alone reboot. I wish all involved the best of luck though.”

One twitter user wrote: “How many times are studios going to reboot Home Alone before they understand that the original is a classic and it cannot be topped.”

Other fans argued that the chemistry between Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, who play the chaotic, slapstick burglars in the original, cannot be recreated.

One user tweeted: “I love Rob Delaney. I love Aisling Bea. I love Ellie Kemper. I love Home Alone. So why does this look so outstandingly terrible?”

Another added: “So someone thought the best replacements for Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern in the Home Alone reboot were…..Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney???”

But there was still a degree of excitement for some.

“Just wanna say I’m open for a Home Alone reboot. I’d be down to check this out. Sure, I’m not 7 like I was in 1990 but the worst case scenario is I’ll just watch the first two after,” said one user.

Another said: “This…actually doesn’t look that bad. I mean it is what it is, a home alone reboot/sequel but honestly it just looks like harmless fun.”

Eagle eyed viewers also spotted that 45 seconds into the trailer, a police officer makes an appearance with the name ‘McCallister’ on the badge, revealing that actor Devin Ratray, who played Kevin’s older brother Buzz in the original, will be returning.

‘Home Sweet Home Alone’ is released on Disney Plus on November 12 2021.
