6 albums you need to hear this week

With music from The Rolling Stones, Bring Me the Horizon, Jack White, Suki Waterhouse, Ebbb and Show Me the Body

By Rolling Stone UK

In the age of streaming, it’s never been easier to listen to new music — but with over 60,000 new songs added to Spotify every day, it’s also never been harder to know what to put on. Every week, the team at Rolling Stone UK will run down some of the best new releases that have been added to streaming services.

This week, we’ve highlighted records by The Rolling Stones, Bring Me the Horizon, Jack White, Suki Waterhouse, Ebbb and Show Me the Body.

The Rolling Stones – Foreign Tongues

It’s remarkable that the Stones have made it to their 25th album, but here is an album that makes you very glad that they have. Foreign Tongues is stuffed with late career highlights, such as the bluesy rocker ‘Divine Intervention’, and a sign that even in their eighties these rock icons still have something to say. A remarkable achievement from a remarkable band.

Bring Me the Horizon – Count Your Blessings | Repented

This 20th anniversary reworking of the debut album from the Sheffield metal titans is billed by the band as a “recontextualisation” of the original release. It sees them revisit and tweak the original tracklist in a way that makes it “sharper, heavier, and more vital than ever”, by their own admission. Though short of a radical reworking, perhaps, long term fans will relish the chance to look back at where it all began for one of Britain’s biggest bands.

Jack White – Frozen Charlotte

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That’s seemingly the mantra from Jack White on this latest album, which sees the White Stripes man gleefully revelling in the rock and roll bombast that has defined his career. ‘Neighbors Blues’ is a true shot in the arm, while the imposing beat of ‘G.O.D. and the Broken Ribs’ propels the album to greatness.

Suki Waterhouse – Loveland

On her latest record, Suki Waterhouse offers up a collection of songs laden with huge contrasts. There’s a joyful swagger to ‘Any Man’, while the production of The National’s Aaron Dessner can be felt on the gentle rhythms of ‘Seasons’. It’s a confident record which sees Waterhouse fully proving her mettle with frequently brilliant results.

Ebbb – Shallow Hits

When Rolling Stone UK met Ebbb two years ago, they emphasised two sides to their music – beauty and brutality. Describing themselves as “Brian Wilson meets Death Gripsm,” they are now focused on the inbetweens. “That was us trying to explain the extremes in our music, but at this point it’s so much more than that,” producer Lev Ceylan says. “It’s expanded and it’s bigger – it’s multi-faceted. For each idea, or each bit of vision we had, we wanted to deliver it in a very maximalist way.” Debut album Shallow Hits fills in these gaps gorgeously, with a whirlwind of ideas that expand their sound well beyond its two extremes.

Show Me the Body – Alone Together

New album Alone Together feels like the best encapsulation of New York City hardcore band Show Me the Body’s sound and ethos yet. Coming together with producers Kenneth Blume (FKA Kenny Beats) and Klas Åhlund (Robyn, Ghost), their scything noise and righteous anger is more potent and direct than ever before. “Blessed are those who stand alone,” frontman Julian Cashwan Pratt spits on ‘Alone Interlude’, fronting a band who are becoming more singular than ever.
