Charli XCX has responded to backlash, amid claims that the organiser of a party she attended has alleged ties to the Russian government.

It was reported by United24Media that the party in question, held in Berlin on February 14 following the international premiere of the pop star’s new film The Moment, was organised by DJ Anastasia Shevtsova. The outlet alleges that her mother Zhanna Shevtsova is the founder of the government-funded “Traditsiya” foundation, and that Anastasia has visited parts of Russian occupied Ukraine since the 2022 invasion.

On her Instagram stories, Charli wrote: “Hi everyone. For clarity, neither me nor my team were aware of any of the alleged affiliations around the party in Berlin.

She continued: “I would like to take this opportunity to say I stand against the atrocities committed by the Russian government in Ukraine and I stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.”

Anastasia – known professionally as Petit – has also distanced herself from the controversy with an Instagram post of her own.

“My family members live in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine,” she said.

“The current tragedy affects me personally and deeply. I would never wish harm, violence or suffering upon anyone. What is happening is heartbreaking for millions of families, including mine,” she continued, adding: “I am not involved in politics or any activities connected to the conflict.”

The Moment, distributed by A24, is a mockumentary set during Charli’s arena tour at the backend of the Brat Summer phenomenon. It’s directed by Aidan Zamiri, and its cast includes the likes of Alexander Skarsgård, Kylie Jenner, Rachel Sennott, Hailey Benton Gates and Jamie Demetriou.

The film releases in cinemas in the UK today, February 20, and comes not long after Charli also created the soundtrack for Wuthering Heights, which stars Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie.
