7 albums you need to hear this week
With music from Blossoms, Johnny Marr, Fat Dog, The Beatles, Phoebe Green, Master Peace and Walt Disco
In the age of streaming, it’s never been easier to listen to new music — but with over 60,000 new songs added to Spotify every day, it’s also never been harder to know what to put on. Every week, the team at Rolling Stone UK will run down some of the best new releases that have been added to streaming services.
This week, we’ve highlighted records by Blossoms, Johnny Marr, Fat Dog, The Beatles, Phoebe Green, Master Peace and Walt Disco.

Blossoms – Songs From the Wedding Cake
With a huge arena tour on the horizon, it’s handy that the sixth album from Blossoms just so happens to be their best record yet. The slinking ‘Joke About Divorce’ is a retro-flecked ear-worm, ‘Additional Driver’ feels like 70s funk-rock Bowie, while ‘Meet Me In Love’ might be the catchiest song they’ve ever made. It’s the sound of a band sound bigger and better than ever before.

Johnny Marr – The Age of Everything
Sometimes you have to look back in order to look forward. It seems that Johnny Marr is only too aware of that, after delivering a record which manages to simultaneously sound like the heyday of The Smiths, while also pulsing with his own solo spirit. That’s all too true on the Smiths-esque rhythm of ‘It’s Time, while ‘Spin’ is a whirring delight. It’s the sound of a legend doing what he does best.

Fat Dog – Cancel Me (I’m Tired)
On their debut album, WOOF, Fat Dog came bursting out of the blocks with endless, frantic energy. Two years of relentless touring followed, leading to the comedown of sorts of suitably-titled follow-up, Cancel Me (I’m Tired). “The lyrics are about shit that happened in the past two years,” vocalist Joe Love says. “Yeah, I’ve got married, but also, shit always goes down. I’d prefer to be a positive songwriter sometimes but… I’m not.”

The Beatles – Rubber Soul (Deluxe)
Though ‘Rubber Soul’ has been written in books that could fill Liverpool to London, the deluxe edition adds a brilliant new dimension to that story. The biggest new surprise is the John Lennon demo ‘Little Girl’ — until now, this song has never been heard or even rumoured. “Yeah, it was surprising,” new producer Giles Martin, son of George Martin, says. “It was one of those things that came from the Lennon Estate — I think it was Sean. It was one of those things where they say, ‘Oh, and then there’s this.’” It’s a raw sketch, with an unfinished lyric, but a bittersweet tune — it sounds like an early draft of ‘I’m Only Sleeping’, which became a highlight of Revolver.

Master Peace – if i don’t love you, who will?
Speaking to Rolling Stone UK back in 2023 ahead of debut album How to Make a Master Peace, the London singer set out his genreless and limitless ambition. “There’s no way I can just sit on the sidelines and do the same thing again,” he said, adding: “I didn’t want to make what people want to hear in the current day and age. I wanted to make what I like and to stand behind it.” This mission statement continues on his second LP, if i don’t love you, who will?. Indie meets R&B, pop and more on an album that never sits still but reaffirms Peace Okezie’s huge personality and knack for catchy songwriting.

Walt Disco – Walt Disco
Self-titling any album that isn’t your debut often signals a reset of sorts for a group. The reasoning certainly fits for Glasgow’s Walt Disco, whose new album comes after a period where they almost dropped the band name entirely. Instead, Walt Disco is a reclamation of the name to fit a new era of the band. The album’s themes centre around frontwoman Jocelyn’s experiences as a trans person, and she says: “A lot of these songs came from feeling incredibly low, but I’m always struck by the kindness I was able to show myself in the lyrics even when I couldn’t be kind to myself like that outside of writing. I hope this helps some people.”

Phoebe Green – Premature Nostalgia
On her second album, Phoebe Green offers up sounds that are both unpredictable, as shown on the brilliant ‘Polluting You With Me’, and indeed heartbreaking. The latter is true on ‘Happy Birthday’, which dissects the reality of being so distant from someone that you only exchange birthday greetings. We’ve all been there. It makes for an album of consistently surprising and occasionally brilliant pop.
