Lauren Mayberry has embarked on her first solo tour, which she kicked off in Washington D.C. at 9:30 Club last night. During the set, which included a cover of Madonna’s ‘Like a Prayer.’

Taking the stage with mic stands adorned with flowers, she and her band gave a fairly faithful rendition of the classic title track of Madonna’s 1989 album, with Mayberry adding a tambourine, as fan footage shows.

She also debuted a number of solo songs and did not perform any tracks from Chvrches, as Stereogum reports. “There’s two depressing slow ones, and then the rest have a bit of pep,” she told the audience last night of her nine-song set list.

Mayberry dropped her debut solo single, the piano-led “Are You Awake?” on Friday. Her tour through U.S. cities continues through September; in October, she heads to Europe for a string of dates.

Though she has launched her solo career, she is also still very much in Chvrches, as she assured fans when she announced her solo tour in July.

“For a long time, I couldn’t imagine ever doing anything outside of Chvrches. Since I was 15 years old, I have always, only, ever been in a band,” she wrote at the time. “I always wanted so badly to belong somewhere — to be one of the boys, and to fit in.”

“But as I sail/stumble through this era of my life (your 20s really do go by in a flash, kids), it has started to feel like there are things I want to write and say and do that need to be done on my own,” she added.

Chvrches will release an extended version of its debut LP, The Bones of What You Believe, on Oct. 13 via Glassnote Records. The group also shared a previously unreleased track, “Manhattan.”

In August, Chvrches collaborated with Death Cab For Cutie on a remix of the band’s new single ‘An Arrow in the Wall.’
