Disney has today (March 18) released an album curated by Minnie Mouse that reimagines its classic film songs as lo-fi hip hop beats tracks.

Over the past decade, lo-fi hip hop beats has become synonymous with study playlists on platforms including YouTube and Spotify. The idea of the genre is that it’s supposed to mirror the human heartbeat and chill listeners out, which has since spawned video titles and the meme, ‘lofi hip hop beats to relax and study to’.

Now, Disney has entered the market with ‘Lofi Minnie: Focus’, an album of its film songs repurposed for the genre and the modern age. Purrple Cat has reworked ‘Hakuna Matata’ from ‘The Lion King’, and there’s also new versions of songs including ‘A Whole New World’ from ‘Aladdin’.

‘Lofi Minnie: Focus’ tracklist:

01. ‘Hakuna Matata’ (‘The Lion King’) – Purrple Cat
02. ‘How Far I’ll Go’ (‘Moana’) – Philanthrope
03. ‘Go The Distance’ (‘Hercules’) – mommy
04. ‘Into The Unknown’ (‘Frozen 2’) – Hippo Dreams
05. ‘A Whole New World’ (‘Aladdin’) – eevee
06. ‘Un Poco Loco’ (‘Coco’) – Krynoze
07. ‘Almost There’ (‘The Princess And The Frog’) – Otesla
08. ‘I Just Can’t Wait To Be King’ (‘The Lion King’) – Epona
09. ‘You’ve Got A Friend In Me’ (‘Toy Story’)” – Jazzinuf
10. ‘Under The Sea’ (‘The Little Mermaid’) – Kupla

On the pairing of Minnie and lo-fi music on the album, Disney said: “Disney and Minnie Mouse are a natural fit with lo-fi, especially with Minnie’s interests in creativity, music, and wellness leaning into lo-fi’s penchant for self-expression and its calming meditative properties.

“Minnie Mouse is one of Disney’s most celebrated icons globally, so who better to represent an album full of Disney hits? We can’t wait to give listeners the ability to peek into Minnie’s world and have her accompany their daily tasks.

“What attracted us to lo-fi is the ability to reimagine our songs in a completely new way that combines the soothing benefits of lofi with the wonder and nostalgia that Disney has to offer. Lo-fi and Disney are both a great source of comfort, so the two make for a perfect match.”

Meanwhile, in other Disney news, the film studio has halted the release of upcoming films in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.
