Paul McCartney has announced his new album The Boys of Dungeon Lane, as well as sharing the emotional first single ‘Days We Left Behind’.

The music icon’s first new solo album in over five years arrives on May 29 and is billed as a deeply contemplative affair which sees him reflect upon his childhood in post-war Liverpool and the early memories of his friendship with George Harrison and John Lennon long before Beatlemania changed the face of the world forever.

This is reflected in the eponymous Dungeon Lane, a place where Paul spent a lot of his childhood, and the tear-jerking lead single.

“This is very much a memory song for me,” said Paul. “The album title, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, comes from a lyric in this track. I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind and I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think how can you write about anything else?

“It’s just a lot of memories of Liverpool. It involves a bit in the middle about John and Forthlin Road which is the street I used to live in. Dungeon Lane is near there. I used to live in a place called Speke which is quite working class. We didn’t have much at all but it didn’t matter because all the people were great and you didn’t notice you didn’t have much.”

The album is produced by Andrew Watt, the American musician who has steadily assembled his own collection of musical Infinity Stones after becoming the go-to-guy for the late Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop and Pearl Jam over the last decade. Now, Macca is the latest addition to his star-studded gauntlet after the pair met for a cup of tea and a successful exchange of initial ideas.

The latest release comes after McCartney debuted Man on the Run last month, the documentary which offers a comprehensive look at the formation of Wings and the immediate decade which followed the split of The Beatles.
