As they launch their brand new weekly music podcast Sidetracked, Annie Mac and Nick Grimshaw have looked back at their longstanding friendship and years of presenting.

The podcast, which launched last week on BBC Sounds, sees the pair exploring the music stories that have got tongues wagging – as well as speaking to artists, friends and industry experts.

While the project marks the latest team-up for the pair, their friendship was cemented almost 20 years ago – prompting Rolling Stone UK to show them a selection of varying photos from their time together.

The first photo sees them hanging out at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in 2008. The event took place in Maidstone, Kent, and saw Madonna among the headliners.

“That was not a good year for me,” Annie Mac recalled. “I had to DJ at the exact same time that Madonna was on and I was literally playing records and hearing her in the background trying to listen and there was literally 12 people there!”

Grimshaw, meanwhile, recalled being struck down by food poisoning alongside Kelly Osbourne – who was hired to take an agony aunt role in the radio slot after him and Mac.

“Me and Kelly travelled to Maidstone together both with food poisoning. And we were so not okay. And we had to go [to big weekend],” he said.

“We wanted to go and we were both so excited but we were just like ‘Oh, our bellies!’ It was rough! We were trying to hold it together while Madonna was doing the Hard Candy tour in Maidstone.”

He added: “I remember that Madonna bought her own toilet too, which everyone thought was outrageous.”

Mac added: “But if you had an option to do so instead of using a manky portaloo, of course you would!”
