Kasabian‘s Serge Pizzorno has told Rolling Stone UK about reworking the band’s recent song G.O.A.T to become the new title track for Sky’s 2025/26 Premier League season coverage.
Taken from their 2024 Number 1 album Happenings, the track has been rewritten and remixed by Serge to feature the vocals of rising South London MC Cristale.
It’s a second stab at the Premier League for the Leicester band, after their seminal anthem ‘Club Foot’ previously soundtracked the intro for the 2009/10 season.
“It’s a beautiful thing that 20 years after ‘Club Foot’ we’ve got a new song that is going to become one of those iconic tracks,” said Serge.
“It’s a real honour. I’ve been watching football for a long time and being part of the fabric of people’s weekends and being a part of it is a big deal. It’s not lost on me.”
As for Cristale’s contributions on the track, Serge explained how he was a huge fan of the Londoner – and they further bonded over a love of football.
“There’s something different about Cristale’s flow and a uniqueness that I that I’m really into,” he said.
“But she’s a baller as well. She plays football and it just made perfect sense. It elevates the track – it gives it something else and it makes it different from the track we initially released on the album. So that’s important – we needed something fresh for this version.”
But is there something bittersweet about soundtracking the Premier League in a year when Serge’s beloved Leicester City have been relegated to the Championship?
“There is a bit, yeah!,” he admitted. “But that’s always the case, you follow through thick and thin and it would have been so perfect if we *were* in the Prem, but it’s not to be. Hopefully it’s just this season and we’ll be straight back up.”
Serge also confirmed that the band are looking to release their 9th album next year, and explained that he’s been getting back into exploring guitar music, having headed in a bolder, pop-driven direction for 2024’s Happenings.
“Everything at this point is on pure instinct, but I’m picking up the guitar every day and it’s making magic. The guitar is a huge part of where I am at the moment,” he said. “It’s really exciting because previously it’s not always interested me that much, but it’s back in my hands every day and it’s singing riffs, massive riffs, so guitar is at the forefront for me at the moment.”
He added: “The world just excites me, you know? I get up and I’m excited by what is possible, and I think that keeps things fresh when we’re nine albums in. Every morning, it’s like music is fuel for me. It’s scientifically proven that it makes you feel better; it touches a part of your brain and that gets ignited when you listen to a bit of music that you love. It really does something to you. So I’m in the business of making that with my bare hands, and that, I think, is another reason for me to just keep making music.”
And finally, given the track’s title – just who is Serge’s Premier League G.O.A.T?
“It’s gonna have to be Jamie Vardy,” comes his unsurprising answer.
“We’ll never see his like again, and you have to hold on and and just feel blessed that that you were a fan when when it went down,” he says of the Premier League winning legend – who has just departed the club.
“Holding on to the past is a dangerous thing,” he added of adjusting to Leicester life post-Vardy.
“There’s gonna be a new young kid, hopefully. We’ve got an amazing 16-year-old called Jeremy Monga and he’s only 16. He’s so young that we had a betting sponsor on our shirts and he had to play in one without it because he’s under 18! A new hero will come along…”
