Audemars Piguet sets the Code 11.59 in stone
Obsidian and onyx take centre stage in two new 38mm models, each with its own take on the black dial
Gold usually gets top billing in a watch, and diamonds know how to steal a scene. In Audemars Piguet’s two new 38mm Code 11.59 Selfwinding models, the most arresting details come from the dial itself. Obsidian and onyx offer two different takes on the black dial, highlighting the beauty of natural stone.
The first pairs volcanic obsidian with an 18-carat yellow gold case. Gold-toned mineral inclusions glint beneath a sunburst motif that draws the eye outwards from the centre of the dial. The effect is at its best in motion. Turn your wrist and what looked like a dark patch a moment ago picks up the warmth of the case. A shimmering brown inner bezel softens the transition from the dark dial to the bright gold around it.
The second goes full evening dress. Here, Audemars Piguet polishes onyx to a mirror finish and sets it against an 18-carat pink gold case. Thirteen baguette-cut diamonds mark the hours, their slim, angular shapes particularly crisp against that inky surface. The warmth of the pink gold carries through to the hands, while a black inner bezel lets the dark dial stretch almost uninterrupted to the edge. It’s the sort of watch you’d leave a little extra room at the cuff for.
Both models come on black alligator straps with buckles in their respective case metals. Through the sapphire caseback, you can see the self-winding Calibre 5909, which drives the hours, minutes and central seconds and offers a 60-hour power reserve.
The choice comes down to what you want to catch out of the corner of your eye. A flash of gold from volcanic glass or the glint of a diamond against polished black. Whichever dial you prefer, the two new additions to the Code 11.59 line-up have a timeless appeal that makes either one a welcome addition to any watch collection.
