Oscar Ouyang’s London Fashion Week debut solidified his status as one to watch

Oscar Ouyang triumphed with his London Fashion Week debut. The Beijing-born designer and Central Saint Martins MA Knitwear alum unleashed a collection that felt part Studio Ghibli fever dream, part rugged street-ready fantasy.
Feathers were everywhere – on jackets, shorts, and a cheeky collaboration with Converse that turned the humble hi-top into a statement piece. It was fantastical, sure, but never untethered from reality.

The show played with contrasts that kept you hooked. Utilitarian jackets and army knits gave the collection a masculine backbone, which perfectly offset the flighty use of feathers. Exaggerated padded silhouettes turned simple T-shirts into theatrical, tongue-in-cheek numbers, while wind-slicked hair – straight out of a George Michael music video – added a rakish, 80s energy.
It was a rugged sex appeal tempered by an undeniable playful sensitivity. A nod to the performative masculinity that’s taken over culture in the last year.

There was a sense of freedom running through every look. Fantasy met function, drama met wearability, and in that space, the designer carved his own niche. You could almost see the influence of Ghibli’s magical worlds in the flutter of feathers, the movement of knits, and the overall sense of liberation. This was knitwear with a narrative, a wink, and an edge.
By the time the last model stomped the runway in feathered Converse, it was clear London Fashion Week had a new voice worth watching. Bold, whimsical, and just a little bit ridiculous – in the best possible way – this debut wasn’t just a show, it was a statement: fantasy can be wearable, masculinity can be soft, and feathers? Well, feathers are everything.
