Diane Morgan has unveiled the first look at her new BBC sitcom Ann Droid, which has revealed a selection of first-look images.

The upcoming series follows Sue (played by The Royle Family legend Sue Johnston) after she is gifted a high-tech “Basic Eldercare Robot” by her son Michael (Motherland star Paul Ready).

The robot, played by Morgan, is meant to be a carer for Sue when Michael leaves home to fix his marriage, but Sue considers it to be her “worst nightmare”.

“It’s Sue’s worst nightmare. An overly attentive, socially inept pain in the arse. But she soon works out she can use the droid to her benefit in settling scores and doing the things her son never gets round to,” a synopsis teases. “What develops is a buddy comedy between an older woman and her robot who isn’t quite as advanced socially as she is technically.”

Ann Droid will arrive on BBC One and iPlayer later this year, co-created by Morgan and former Taskmaster star Sarah Kendall.

At the time of filming last year, Johnston commented: “I’m thrilled to be back in the heart of BBC comedy. Diane and Sarah have created a comedy that will resonate with lots of different audiences, for different reasons and I cannot wait to get started.”

Ready added: “I don’t know much, but I do know that if you get a chance to work with Diane Morgan, you take it. Immediately! Can’t wait to be reunited and bring Michael to life in her brilliant comic series.”
