Arcade Fire have announced a surprise performance for this year’s Coachella.

Frontman Win Butler made the announcement on social media as he posted a selfie in front of palm trees with the caption: “Decided to spend my birthday somewhere warm and dry [palm tree emoji] @coachella.”

Coachella later revealed that the band will play the Mojave tent on 15 April between 6:45pm and 7:45pm which is after Carly Rae Jepson.

Representatives for the band confirmed that they will only play the festival’s first weekend.

Earlier this week, the band teased a new single from their upcoming album ‘WE’. In a video on Arcade Fire‘s Instagram, Butler can be seen playing the album on vinyl when he can be heard saying “next single is” followed by a snippet of a song.

It is believed the song is ‘Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)’ which was played during the band’s run of Ukraine benefit concerts.

Harry Styles is headlining Coachella’s opening night with Billie Eilish to topping the Saturday night and a combined set from The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia closing the show.

The California-set festival will also see acts such as Megan Thee Stallion, Jamie xx and Phoebe Bridgers perform across the three days.

Kanye West was originally set to headline the festival for a second time but pulled out of the event less than two weeks before he was scheduled to perform.

Earlier in the year, West threatened to pull out of the festival if Eilish didn’t apologise to Travis Scott over a perceived slight regarding the disaster at Scott’s Astroworld Festival.

The two-weekend event takes place April 15-17 and April 22-24 in Indio, California.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic it is the first Coachella to take place since 2019.

The cancelled 2020 festival was originally supposed to be headlined by Rage Against the Machine, Frank Ocean and Travis Scott. None of the three acts are appearing at the 2022 event.
