Yard Act announce third album ‘You’re Gonna Need a Little Music’ and share dark lead single
The third record from the Leeds titans will arrive in July
By Nick Reilly
Yard Act have announced their third album You’re Gonna Need a Little Music, as well as the thunderous lead single ‘Redeemer’.
The Leeds rockers will release their next record on July 17 via Island Records. It marks their first album since 2024’s Where’s My Utopia?.
The first taste of the record arrives today in ‘Redeemer’, which sees them delivering their heaviest song to date. The signature spoken word style of frontman James Smith is present and correct, but it’s an altogether darker proposition. “Redeemer / You stole the sun / Now you orbit is the bullshit of the damage done,” sings Smith.
They joined forces with Nine Inch Nails bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen on the record, which was recorded between Los Angeles and Leeds.
“The first two records were both laptop records essentially,” Smith said of the record, the first the band have recorded in the same room. He explained that the album was created during an “uninterrupted five month period” of creativity.
“It felt like freedom. It felt like everything I’d wanted from being in a band,” said Smith of the time, which saw them produce between 40 or 50 songs.
