Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman play a married couple on the verge of entering the violent arena of divorce in the new trailer for The Roses, a “reimagining” of the novel and 1989 film The War of the Roses.
In the domestic black comedy directed by Meet the Parents’ Jay Roach, Cumberbatch and Colman’s marriage goes downhill when the former loses his job and the latter’s professional career as a chef takes off.
Thrust into a Mr. Mom role, the two constantly and comically bicker, with Cumberbatch admitting he has “sporadic” hatred for his wife. Things escalate throughout the trailer, with ruined dinners and heated divorce hearings ultimately leading to Colman pointing a gun at Cumberbatch in the lavish home the couple are forced to share.
“Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids,” Searchlight Pictures said in its synopsis. “But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.”
Also joining the war of The Roses are Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg (as Theo’s friend and divorce lawyer), Alison Janney (as Ivy’s tenacious divorce lawyer), Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, and Zoë Chao. The Roses hits theaters on August 29th.
1989’s The War of the Roses, based on the Warren Adler novel, starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner — the pair previously starred in Romancing the Stone and The Jewel of the Nile together — as the ill-fated couple (though Douglas played a successful lawyer and Turner an exasperated homemaker), with Danny DeVito both directing the film and co-starring as Douglas’ divorce lawyer.
