Charli XCX and director Aidan Zamiri have lauded Alexander Skarsgård’s performance in the megastar’s new film The Moment.

The new mockumentary is a satirical look at Charli’s preparations for her first arena tour following the enormous success of her album Brat, dissecting the conflict between herself and Atlantic Records.

In the film, Atlantic commission an Amazon Music film documenting the arena tour as part of their attempts to keep Brat profitable and culturally relevant. It’s directed by Johannes Godwin (played by Skarsgård), whose practices frequently disturb Charli and her friend and creative director Celeste (Hailey Gates).

“Bringing Alex on was incredible. Johannes was pretty evil when he was on the page, but Alex managed to sort of really bring a new level of sinister to him, which was amazing,” said Zamiri speaking with Rolling Stone UK.

“We knew we wanted him (Skarsgård),” said Charli. “We’ve been a fan of his work from, honestly, the Lady Gaga video (Paparazzi), the Zoolander days, but also The Northman and Infinity Pool.

“He’s such a brilliant actor and his new film Pillion, I just think it’s so brilliant and stunning,” she continued, before adding: “I think he’s so diverse, and so when we got on Zoom and pitch to him our film, we were so excited when he responded. I just think he’s so brilliant.”

Agreeing, Zamiri also recalled how Skarsgård was at the top of their list of potential cast members.

“Alex was our first man who was actually in, the first actor apart from Charli who was signed on,” Zamiri revealed.

Skarsgård is just one of the many A-listers who make up the film’s impressive cast. Alongside him are the likes of Rachel Sennott, Jamie Demetriou and Kylie Jenner, the latter of whom Zamiri was particularly pleased to work with.

“Our other cast members, people like Kylie – God, we’re just so lucky she was down to be on board,” Zamiri said.

“I feel really stoked we’ve got such a stellar, stacked cast,” he continued.

The Moment will be released in cinemas in the UK on February 20.
