Anderson .Paak to make directorial debut with comedy film ‘K-POPS!’

The rapper and singer will star in the film alongside his son, with production scheduled to start later this year

Anderson .Paak is set to make his feature directorial debut with the drama-comedy film K-POPS!

The rapper and singer will star in the film about a washed up musician who sets off for Korea to write songs for K-pop stars, only to find out his long-lost son (played by real-life son Soul Rasheed) is the star of one of the country’s best new groups.

“My mom is from Korea but she was adopted so I never knew anything about my Korean heritage until I met my wife. This movie is a reflection on my experience learning about this part of myself alongside my wife and son – and spending even more time with them,” .Paak in a statement (via Deadline). “I knew this would be something I should write and direct, and Stampede Ventures took a chance and trusted that I could pull this off. I’m excited to bring it to the big screen.”

.Paak wrote the script with Khaila Amazan, and will produce via his company Apeshit Films. Greg Silverman will also produce on behalf of Stampede Ventures, Jon “Dumbfoundead” Park on behalf of Big Dummie and Jaeson Ma on behalf of EST Studios.

According to Deadline, production is due to kick off in the fourth quarter of this year.

“As a long time friend of Anderson’s I’ve seen him expand his creative vision time and time again,” Park said. “I’m excited for my production company “Big Dummie” to be a part of of this unique story that brings together and celebrates Black and Asian culture through the love of music. I also can’t wait for the world to meet his son, Soul Rasheed who I know everyone is going to love!”

Stampede Ventures’ CEO and founder, Silverman added: “Anderson .Paak is a trailblazer by nature, whose amazing work will naturally translate onto the big screen for feature films.

“He is a monster talent with a huge heart and a bigger smile. This is just the beginning for this superstar.”

.Paak won four Grammys alongside Bruno Mars for their R&B act Silk Sonic, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for ‘Leave the Door Open’. .Paak’s most recent solo album, 2019’s ‘Ventura’, won two Grammys.

Silk Sonic are currently in the middle of a Vegas residency, ‘An Evening With Silk Sonic’.
