Coldplay have pulled out of two planned live performances over the weekend after positive COVID tests in the band’s touring party.

The group were unable to appear as scheduled at Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball on Saturday (December 11). They also dropped out of a planned appearance on The Voice Of Germany the following day.

In a statement to social media, Coldplay said: “We send our love to the individuals affected and wish them a swift recovery.

“We’re so sorry to cancel at the last minute and apologise to everyone concerned. Thank you as ever for your support.”

Lil Nas X also dropped out of the Jingle Bell Ball after a member of his own team tested positive for coronavirus. He had been due to perform the following evening (December 12).

ArrDee and Tom Grennan were added to the lineup last minute, while Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran played extended sets. Years and Years, Clean Bandit, KSI and more still performed as planned.

“We’d like to wish the very best and a speedy recovery to Coldplay, Lil Nas X and their teams,” the radio station said in a statement. “Of course, everyone at Capital is absolutely gutted, but the show must go on.”

Coldplay will resume their live plans next year with a run of eco-friendly shows in support of their latest album ‘Music Of The Spheres’, which came out in October.

When announcing the run of dates, Coldplay outlined a list of measures that would reduce their carbon footprint while out on the road. This includes giving discounts to fans who travel to the concerts by public transport and donating 10 per cent of earnings to climate change organisations.

Speaking about the shows last week, Chris Martin nevertheless conceded that there’s still “a long way to go” to find a sustainable way of touring.
