Rina Sawayama unveils dramatic new video for ‘Hurricanes’
Her second album ‘Hold the Girl’ arrived last Friday (September 16)

Rina Sawayama has unveiled a dramatic new video for her latest single, ‘Hurricanes’ – you can see it below.
Following on from the release last Friday (September 16) of her second studio album, Hold the Girl, Sawayama has released a third high-concept clip from the record, after having trailed the album with videos for the title track and ‘This Hell’.
The track deals lyrically with the theme of embracing the challenges that life throws at you. Sawayama discussed similar ideas in an extensive interview with Rolling Stone UK earlier this year, as she talked about her changing perspective as she enters her 30s.
“To be able to see the things that happened in the past from an adult perspective is something that’s very new to when you’re in your 30s,” she explained. “Also, now I’m at my parents’ age when they had me, that’s a new perspective that I can now see, like, ‘God, I cannot imagine being a parent at this age.’”
She also discussed her relatively late arrival on the pop scene with SAWAYAMA, which won rave reviews upon its release back in April 2020. “I’m 31 now, I signed my first album deal when I was 29, so I’m coming quite late to this game, especially as a pop artist.”
“A lot of pop artists start young, their parents support them and their parents walk them through this insane journey and career and industry,” she continued. “I don’t have that; like, my mum was in Japan the whole time [SAWAYAMA] was doing its thing and she doesn’t have any knowledge of the industry.”
In a three-and-a-half star review of Hold the Girl for Rolling Stone UK, El Hunt called the title track a joyful, gentle declaration of self-acceptance that’s surely up there with Sawayama’s best work to date,” but also noted that while the album “will no doubt earn multiple comparisons to Gaga’s Born This Way, it doesn’t always forge its own singular voice in the same way.”
