The British/South African artist strives to be independent in an industry that is often dominated by people pushing creatives in multiple directions.
Jessie Malcolm has always strived to be a person whose voice stands for something. As a singer and songwriter who infuses her soulful music with the idea of human connection, she has shaped her sound through honest storytelling, drawing on a wide range of emotions to create records that resonate with listeners.
“[Music is] the one place I could be fully vulnerable and give my voice to be heard through,” the artist shares. “I always say I sing my way out of the dark.”
Early Inspirations and Influences
Working in music has been a life-changing experience for Malcolm. Inspired by the works of Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and other soul and gospel artists of the ‘70s, Jessie Malcolm has shaped her career with music that was born out of situations where she felt broken and lost before finding joy again.
“The goal of my music is really human connection and healing,” the artist shares. “Music and art have always been my safe zone.”
Despite her success, Malcolm hasn’t always felt as confident as she does now. Self-doubt, and the influence of others, originally pushed her in too many directions. However, the artist shares that she is learning how to trust herself on a deeper level.
Becoming Jessie Malcolm, the Singer/Songwriter
Malcolm’s recent successes have included co-writing “Glow” for Lamiya, which rose to the number one spot on Germany’s iTunes store. Malcolm has also performed on the BBC Introducing stage at Latitude Festival, and has been an alumni artist with Sofar Sounds. She’s also performed with various gospel choirs. Malcolm says her most recent single, “Me Over Us,” is set to receive radio play soon.
Remaining Resilient and Curious in a Competitive Industry Jessie Malcolm understands that not everyone makes it in the industry, and for that reason, tries to take everything in stride when it comes to her career but never stops dreaming.

“Remain curious. Setbacks are an opportunity for growth. Adversity makes you stronger and more resilient,” the artist says. “It’s never too late, ever.”
As an artist who aims to never stop exploring or learning, and who wants to tour the world while creating a musical world that people can step into, Jessie Malcolm has taken some of her darkest moments and turned them
into things that she hopes others will call beautiful. With plans to begin playing more guitar in her next chapter, her dream is to be in a position where she can make art for the world, all while telling her story on her own terms.
Jessie Malcolm’s music is available on Spotify and Apple Music.
